A Young Crick in England

Francis Crick came into this world in Northamptonshire, England. Born of Harry and Anne Elisabeth Crick His two parents raised the young boy in the town of Weston Favell. The town location was ideal because of its close proximity to the family’s boot and shoe factory. It was here at a young age that Crick turned to science. In fact, the only thing that could take him away from gleaning scientific data from every book available was the obligation of church. A Congregationalist church, to be exact. But by twelve, Crick resolved the conflicting interests whe he told his mother he would no longer attend church. Crick no longer wanted to attend a place that provided answers only through faith, and not logic and reasoning.

Crick in SchoolCrick attended Northampton Grammar School, but by fourteen he moved on to Mill Hill School in London. Here he studied mathematics, physics and chemistry, all on a scholarship as well. Crick received a B.Sc. degree in physics from University College London by 21. The splendid ascent of our shining star ends here, however, when Crick fails to gain a position at Cambridge college because of an unmet Latin requirement. It would be a refusal he’d never forget, and in 1977, after 25 years of work, Crick would leave Cambridge after refusing the Mastership of the college.
